If you have moved to Alberta from another Canadian jurisdiction you are required to switch to an Alberta license within 90 days of entering the province.
TO SWITCH YOUR LICENSE YOU WILL REQUIRE:
Proof of your Legal Entitlement – Valid Canadian Passport, Canadian Birth Certificate, Indian Status Card, Canada Work/Study Permit, Permanent Resident Document/Card, Canadian Citizenship Document/Card.
SWITCHING A US LICENSE TO AN ALBERTA LICENSE
When you move from the US to Canada you are required to switch to an Alberta license within 90 days of entering the province.
TO SWITCH YOUR LICENSE YOU WILL REQUIRE:
RECIPROCAL OUT OF COUNTRY LICENSE EXCHANGES
The following countries have a reciprocal agreement with Alberta which allows the licenses to be exchanged without any testing required. You must have 2 full years of driving history showing to be exempt from the GDL program. Commercial licenses and learner permits are not part of this agreement. If your license is not valid you do not qualify for the exchange, you must first renew your license before you can exchange it.
TO GET AN ALBERTA LICENSE YOU WILL REQUIRE:
LICENSE FROM A NON-RECIPROCAL COUNTRY
When your license is from a country that has not signed a reciprocal agreement you can apply for a GDL exemption. The GDL exemption process allows you to gain credit for the time that you have been driving in the other country.
TO APPLY FOR THE GDL EXEMPTION YOU WILL NEED TO:
Take a knowledge test
Submit your foreign license, international license and any supporting documents
Submit a certified translation if the license or documents are not in English
Come back to the registry office in 3-4 weeks to find out Alberta Motor Vehicles decision based on the submitted documentation
